The Board of the Merseyside Crimestoppers charity is appealing to businesses for help to support brave citizens who combat crime in local neighbourhoods and the unsung heroes who tackle business crime.

Peter Jones, Deputy Chair and formerly with Liverpool Chamber of Commerce makes the first appeal for business support. “Each year we need to raise funds to pay for rewards and for our specific anti crime campaigns. This year we have teamed up with the Liverpool Echo to identify local ‘Crime Stoppers of the Year’ amongst members of the public but also in some business sectors.

“Local firm Home Bargains have sponsored the Retail Crime Stopper of the Year award and we are looking for retailers to recognise the crime fighting efforts of their retail or security staff and nominate them for the awards.

“Pub company Town and City have sponsored the Crime Stopper of the Year awards for the night-time economy. Local company Transactis of Whiston is sponsoring the Financial Services Crimestopper award.”

Mike Wyeth, Security Advisor to the Transactis Board said, “This is a novel award and has the backing of the North West Fraud Forum. Transactis have been long term supporters of Merseyside Crime Stoppers. We are developing anti fraud services to combat fraud against all business sectors. We are delighted to sponsor this award. With so many local firms trading on line, organised fraud and identity theft has massively increased. With this award we are seeking to recognise the efforts of front line staff in the financial services sector that prevent and detect fraud.”

Merseyside Crimestoppers needs businesses to nominate deserving staff and to support us financially by buying tables at the Awards Dinner on the 21st October 2010 at The Liner, Lord Nelson Street in the city centre when the Chief Constable will present the awards.

TV comedian Carl Schofield heads the bill for the Awards Dinner which is set to be an excellent evening and tables are selling well at just £300 for a table of ten.

In a second appeal, Ian McDonald, formerly an Assistant Chief Constable and the Chair of Merseyside Crimestoppers appeals for local businesses to allow staff time and facilities to volunteer for service on the Board, perhaps as part of their career development.

He said, “My Board does an excellent job but we all agree we need some fresh blood, especially people with business skills in the marketing, publicity, fund raising and web-master spheres.”

The charity works to encourage the public to pass on information to detect crime and in some circumstances pays out a reward when requested. It campaigns to reduce and prevent crime with specific projects aimed at particular crimes in local neighbourhoods such as gun and knife crime.

Merseyside Crimestoppers is the regional branch of the national crime detection charity. The charity works to promote the anonymous use of the 0800 555 111 telephone number. Crimestoppers is deliberately independent of the police (who are a close partner) so as to encourage members of those communities who feel unable to pass information to the police directly.

The charity encourages the public to pass on information to detect crime and in some circumstances pays out a reward when requested. It campaigns to reduce and prevent crime with specific projects aimed at particular crimes in local neighbourhoods such as gun and knife crime.

Anyone who wanting to help Merseyside Crimestoppers should get in touch with Peter Jones on 07742 853 475 or at peter_jones38@sky.com.

Here’s the latest roadworks and closures update for the streets of Liverpool.

Points to note this week include the closure of Clarence Street this weekend for resurfacing and the closure of traffic coming along the side of the Churchill Way Flyover onto Dale Street - it will have to turn right onto Hatton Garden instead. Full details of both of these are in the update. There is also more information on the Dale Street closure in a press release at: http://www.liverpool.gov.uk/News/newsdetail_2119.asp

The update also contains information about the LGBT Pride Event which involves some road closures on Saturday, 7th August, including most of Dale Street; and information on a closure of a section of West Derby Road, and Old Hall Street this Sunday for a crane lift.

Roads Affected by Works
Aigburth Road / Baltic Triangle / Childwall Road / City Centre Events (LGBT Pride Event) / Commercial District (Dale Street & Old Hall Street) / Edge Lane / Hall Lane / Knowledge Quarter (Mount Pleasant area) / Merseyrail / Picton Road / Queensway Tunnel / West Derby Road

Aigburth Road
Work is underway to replace a gas main on Aigburth Road between Beechwood Road and Dingle Lane. There have been some problems with phase 2 which is now expected to last for a further two weeks.

The work is being carried out in four phases:

• Beechwood Road to St Margaret’s C of E School, (including the Aigburth Road/Aigburth Hall Avenue junction) - Complete
• St. Margaret’s C of E School to the junction of Fulwood Park and Aigburth Rd for 8 weeks – Current Phase.
• Fulwood Park to the junction of Colsbrooke Rd and Aigburth Road for 12 weeks.
• The junction of Colsbrooke Rd and Aigburth Road along Colsbrooke Rd into Dingle Vale and into Dingle Lane for 4 weeks.
The work is being carried out under lane restrictions and there may be slight variations to the programme due to unforeseen circumstances. This information will be regularly updated.

The slip road off Aigburth Road outbound, just before the traffic lights, leading to Aigburth Vale, will be closed from August 9th to August 20th. Buses and other traffic will be diverted into Sefton Park and back onto Aigburth Vale.

Baltic Triangle
The CCMS scheme to improve the pavements and highways in the Baltic Triangle area has been on site since March 2010. Access to all local businesses is available at ALL times.

Sections of Jamaica Street between Norfolk Street and Bridgewater Street are closed to traffic to allow the works to be completed safely and efficiently although access is available via side streets to all businesses. The section of Jamaica Street from Parliament Street to Norfolk Street is now complete and completely resurfaced. Traffic signal installation at the Parliament Street end of Jamaica Street will be completed by the end of next month.

Childwall Road
From Monday, 26th July for three weeks traffic will not be able to turn left off Childwall Road onto Mosspits Lane or Beauclair Drive while a sewer connection is installed across the junction.

City Centre Events
LGBT Pride Event: This event is on Saturday, 7th August and includes a parade which sets off from Lime Street at around 11.30am. The following roads will be closed while th parade passes through and then reopened to traffic: Lime Street from St John’s Lane to London Road; St John’s Lane; Queens Square; Whitechapel; Lord Street; Castle Street; and Dale Street.

Dale Street will closed to all traffic from the early hours of Saturday and all day for the main Pride event from Sir Thomas Street to Castle Street with all side roads within that section and the Churchill Way Flyover also closed.

Commercial District
On Dale Street work is continuing between Vernon Street and Cheapside with the temporary road closure of Cheapside and Hockenhall Alley to allow the construction of new raised sections of footpath across the side roads along Dale Street. During this closure, access into Cheapside and Cunliffe Street will still be via Tithebarn Street but egress will be unavailable onto Dale Street making the streets temporarily two way. The two streets will not be closed simultaneously. Businesses and residents have been advised via consultation leaflets.

The work area will then move in sections towards Hatton Garden before moving back along the opposite side of the road outside the Municipal Buildings. The slip road from Hatton Garden onto Dale Street will be temporarily closed from Sunday, 1st August to allow the safe construction of the kerbs and footpaths. This closure will be carefully monitored and consultation will be begin to possibly make it permanent.

Works on the southern footpath, between Castle Street and North John Street, have been reprogrammed to start after the completion of the Liverpool LGBT Pride Festival on 7th August to enable reconstruction works to proceed ahead of schedule. The benefits will include a minimal affect on through traffic (as there is sufficient carriageway width available locally) and will also minimize the actual construction period on site whilst reducing budgetary and programming risk to the project.

Delays are continuing to be experienced due to shallow underground services found on site but the City Council is working with partners to undertake diversion works to minimise delays to the construction period.

Transco upgrade works are expected in the area around Hackins Hey which will close for a weekend on a date to be agreed to minimise impact upon local traffic and businesses.

The whole section of ‘blacktop’ carriageway along Dale Street between the flyover and Exchange St East will be reconstructed before the end of the scheme by Enterprise Liverpool Ltd in partnership with the City Council.

On Old Hall Street work is now underway on the section of footpath between Old Leeds Street and Rigby Street. Transco have been undertaking works at this junction under agreement with the City council to minimize disruption in the future. The removal of the traffic island at the junctions with Old Leeds Street and Rigby Street were successfully completed last weekend. This will now make through traffic flows easier and safer and also make the forthcoming one way restriction northbound between Brooke Street and Union Street easier to implement and understand.

The whole of the CCMS works in the Commercial District be completed by early 2011.

Old Hall Street will be closed this Sunday, 1st August while a crane is lifted in between Leeds Street and Brook Street. There will be a signed diversion route along Leeds Street, King Edward Street, New Quay, George’s Dock Gates, Chapel Street, Rumford Place and Union Place.

Edge Lane
There will be lane restrictions on Sunday, 1st August for trial holes between 8am and 4pm.

Hall Lane Strategic Gateway
Hall Lane Strategic Gateway, now under construction, will provide a much improved traffic route for vehicles entering Liverpool from the east and will take through traffic out of the residential areas.

West Derby Street is now closed until towards the end of the year to enable major utilities and junction work to be carried out.

Service diversion work, including a major gas main, will continue up Irvine Street and across Minshull Street. Some further changes will be put in place to the temporary road layout to enable this work to be carried out in stages.

There will be some lane restrictions and closures around the Low Hill/Prescot Street/Kensington junction to move the traffic lights into temporary blocks. These restrictions will be in place for 20 weeks while the layout of the junction is changed.

The reinforced earth retaining wall is complete and is now being clad with sandstone. In situ reinforced concrete walls are required for short lengths at each end of the wall, and work on these is now in progress.

The sandstone in front of the wall is being excavated to road formation level and the excavated material is being re-used on site.

The Presbytery rebuilding works are complete and the car park area is being prepared.

Other off line road works have been continuing and parts of the new road have had drainage installed and road construction completed up to underside of the surface course.

We apologise in advance for any disruption these works will cause as we create a much improved route for vehicles entering our city from the east and remove through traffic from residential areas.

Knowledge Quarter/Mount Pleasant
Work is continuing on the CCMS scheme in the Knowledge Quarter in the area around the Metropolitan Cathedral and Liverpool University.

The upper part of Mount Pleasant from the junction with Oxford Street to Brownlow Hill is closed to traffic to allow the works to be completed safely. Safe and accessible pedestrian facilities will be maintained throughout the extent of the works. The footpath around the perimeter of the Metropolitan Cathedral is now opened ahead of schedule to enable pedestrian movements to be facilitated around the works.

Access to the University car parks, Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, Cathedral House and the Catholic Chaplaincy to the University is being maintained at all times from the Brownlow Hill junction while Upper Mount Pleasant is closed.

Works to the area outside the steps to the Metropolitan Cathedral are continuing ahead of paving works to ensure completion of this footpath and revised road alignment before Hope Street Feast in September.

Footpath works are now complete in Great Orford Street. Work is almost complete on Clarence Street to kerbs and footpaths. Clarence Street will be closed after the evening peak traffic period on Friday, 30th July and reopen in time for morning peak traffic on Monday, 2nd August for the entire road to be resurfaced. These works are subject to suitable weather conditions and if there is heavy rain, it will have to be postponed. There will be further information in next week’s update.

Advance Traffic signal works to the junction at Clarence/Rodney/Mount Pleasant are complete ahead of schedule. New carriageway surfacing and road markings, including advanced stop lines for cyclists will be completed at a later date after kerbing and pedestrian tactile facilities have been installed.

Work has also started on sections of footpath on the outbound lane between Mount Pleasant car park and Clarence Street. Delays are being experienced due to damaged cellars caused by earlier Statutory Undertakers’ works. These have left structural problems which are slowing down CCMS works until an agreeable solution to all parties can be found.

The whole of the works connected with this scheme an including Oxford Street are due for completion in February next year.

Merseyrail
It may be useful to note that there is a rail replacement bus service in operation on the Northern Line between Hunts Cross and Liverpool Central from Saturday, 24th July to Friday, 27th August, 2010. For more details, please visit the Merseytravel website at www.merseytravel.gov.uk

Picton Road
Emergency works to repair a gas leak are still underway at the junction with Wellington Road with lane restrictions and temporary traffic lights. The works will move into Rathbone Road with delays still expected in the area.

Queensway Tunnel
Queensway Tunnel will also be closed in both directions between 10pm and 6.30am from Monday, 2nd August to Thursday, 5th August for essential maintenance work. It will also be closed from 10pm to 6.30am from Monday, 23rd August to Thursday, 26th August, again for essential maintenance work.

West Derby Road
West Derby Road outbound will be closed from the Tuebrook Roundabout to Delamain Road from Sunday, 1st August for 10 days for works to the gas mains. There will be a signed diversion route in place along Muirhead Avenue and Queens Drive.

A puffin crossing is being installed near the junction with Winsford Road. These works are underway with lane restrictions.

A group of youngsters have been recognised as “ones to watch” by Liverpool’s top business leaders.

Students from Parklands High School in Speke took part in a special “Brew Off” organised by Greater Merseyside Connexions European Social Fund Project and Brew tea bar.

The competition challenged the students to create a new flavour of tea, along with an accompanying business plan and marketing strategy, and was designed to test their business acumen.

The winning tea, which includes mulberry leaves, orange blossom and lemon peel and is called Mulberry Madness, was decided by a panel of representatives from Acorn, Liverpool Chamber of Commerce and Pinnacle Partitioning and Joinery. It will be available from Brew tea bars on Bold Street and in St Paul’s Square in the coming weeks.

Kieran Gordon, Chief Executive at Greater Merseyside Connexions, said: “This competition encouraged the pupils to look at everything that comes with a business start-up, from financial planning to packaging.

“There is a wealth of talent in our schools and colleges that local businesses can tap into and I would encourage more businesses to follow Brew’s lead.”

The competition contributes towards the students’ BTEC Business Studies qualification.

Phil Kirby, owner of Brew, said: “It was great to see the kids really get into the competition and come up with some fantastic concepts in the short time they had.

“The whole package around Mulberry Madness was near perfect and far exceeded our expectations, and the winning team got our brand tone of voice spot on.

“The previous winning tea from Bebington High School is now the official tea of the Liverpool Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo, so we’re hopeful of similar success for Mulberry Madness.”

Yvonne Sharples, head teacher at Parklands High School, added: “This has really brought to life the skills that the students have learned in the classroom and it will be a huge confidence boost for them to see their product on sale across the city.”

Connexions is the impartial information, advice and guidance service that offers young people support in everything from planning their education or career, to personal finances, health and relationships.

And if you need any “cures” then Panacea Associates is here to help….

Panacea Associates started life in 2002 and became a Limited Company (Taylor Neighbourhood Renewal Limited) in 2004. Initially drawing upon community regeneration experience within multi sector partnerships (Merseyside Objective 1 pathways partnerships), the company started out supporting neighbourhood renewal programmes in deprived areas across the country, primarily as a central government appointed advisor.

Work soon expanded into other areas and over time, support to business and the third sector was being provided on organisational and operational matters – “making organisations work better through their people, systems and processes”.

The organisation now provides a range of operational and organisational support mechanisms to organisations across the public, private, social enterprise and third sectors, and acts as advisors for a number of Government funded programmes.
